Ryoanji Temple

This was one of the first things you saw when you came into this sanctuary!  The pond was so serene and beautiful.  It is called Oshidoridera.  This temple wasn't like the other ones we had previously visited - it was a rock garden!
This is the moss garden:
Michael liked this figure on top of one of the doorways:
This is a unique stone wash-basin called "Tsukubai".  It is the wash basin for the tea room with an interesting inscription:  "I learn only to be contented."  He who learns to be contented  is spiritually rich, while the one who does not learn to be contented is spiritually poor even if he is materially wealthy:
The rock garden is only 25 meters from East to West and 10 meters from North to South.  It consists of only 15 rocks and white gravel.  It is up to each visitor to find out for themselves what the garden signifies.  What I found interesting is that no matter where you are in the garden, one rock will always be out of view so perfection is never achieved.  Something to contemplate.  It was a very unique experience to see so many people just sitting there staring at rocks :)

I liked this little card:
We finally found the bridge that led out to the little island:
...and there was a shrine out there!  BTW - the fan I am holding was the best 300 yen we spent on our trip - it is SO hot and humid with absolutely stagnant air!
