Hiji Falls

We finally got to Hiji Falls and the hike was beautiful. Lots of spiders though. Big ones. It was so incredibly hot, humid, sticky, nasty, disgusting...but that is what we expected. When we got home we saw that it was a black flag day (no PT'ing outside)...nice. It only took about 40 minutes to get to the falls, uphill, and then around 25 minutes to get back to the car:
This was the first little bridge we came to:

There were lots of steep steps! Here is the suspension bridge (about 1/2 way to the falls). It was very wobbly in the middle and I didn't care for it:...and you can tell from the grimace on my face:Looking down from the bridge:These people didn't even bother with getting to the falls, they just stripped down and jumped in!
Looking up at the falls (where you can see the people):from a higher vantage point:The rocks along the way were very beautiful with all of the greenery:We made it!

Heading down to cooler temperatures (notice the sign on the rocks that was warning of Habu snakes - the signs were everywhere along the paths!)

Me relaxing by the cool water:Michael jumped out to the middle rock for some pictures:There were only a handful of people there when we arrived:One of the pictures Michael took from below the falls:Michael next to the falls:This is what it looked like when we left - packed!

After we were done we headed to Pizza In The Sky - and it was well worth a second trip back!!

Cape Hedo

Not only did we hike Hiji Falls yesterday, but we also went up to Hedo Point! Hedo Point is the Northernmost tip of Okinawa. Amazing pretty much sums it up:

This compass on the ground points North (to where the big rock formation is, and where we're standing in the picture above):Here is the big "rock formation" from the previous picture, up close:
We stopped in the little shops for some chicken yakitori before we headed up to Hiji Falls:
My first experience without any Western-style toilets :)
We tried to go and see the "cliffs" ?? It was a tourist attraction that they wanted money for - so we saved it for another time and day. This was the road you had to take back:
There were all sorts of monuments - we're not sure what any of them said though:Like this bird. Seriously. I guess it would help if we could read Kanji to see the significance of this bird, but there was an even larger bird on the side of the mountain further up (we're talking a 10-15 foot bird). Anyone know why they're so prominant in this area??
This was from the ride up there (water is on the left of us) - really curvy roads and lots of looong tunnels:Heading back down South to hike Hiji Falls (water is on the right of us)!

Rock Band

We had waaay too much fun at our friend's Dean and Ebeth's house this weekend - playing Rock Band! I may not have the best voice, but I have lots of energy!!
Dean singing and Ebeth concentrating:
Matt rockin' it like its cool:
I think this is Michael's reaction to me trying to play the drums:
The guys playing before the girls jumped in (it was serious business at this point):...and then I got on drums and everything went downhill from there!Katie and I jammin':Michael really trying to play the guitar well (I believe the tongue was going too - to help him concentrate):Singing and playing (not well mind you, but still singing and playing):

Michael's Promotion!

Michael was promoted Friday morning from 1st Lt to Captain! That will be a nice jump in pay :) It's been a long time coming, since he missed the cutoff by 90 days last year!
The Col was faster than I was at putting the rank on:
Now there are 3 Captains in the Hager family (I know...I know...Bryan is a LT, but its equal to a Capt right??!)--and 2 Capt's on my side of the family :) I think I should meritoriously be given the rank of Capt just so I can fit in.The Col saying some nice words about Michael:Yeah!!A video of the promotion (sorry if it bores you, but I thought family back home might like to see it):

Happy Memorial Day weekend to everyone! We should have more pics tomorrow (hopefully) since we're going to hike Hiji Falls.

Ms. Sadie's Retirement Luncheon

A little old Hawaiian lady that I work with retired yesterday and these are some pictures from her retirement luncheon. She worked for DoD on Okinawa for 57 years!! Evidently, in her prime she was a force to be reckoned with - she could even recite orders from memory if you just gave her the order number! She is a sweet old lady and I'll miss her smiling face when I walk into the Col's office.
We gave her a gold watch (among many other things) as a retirement gift and she was tickled pink (she is holding a "Sayonara Doll" signed by all of FE):Some of the past Facilities Engineers Asst Chiefs of Staff came back to wish her well:
Some girls from my office performed a hula dance for her:The big guy on the right is also from my office (Shima-san) :)
The Col was reading her notes that Lt Gen Zilmer and Maj Gen Krussa-Dossin had written to her in a copy of the Okinawa Living book:
